History

In 1969, Donald and Doris Fisher founded the Gap store, which provided clothes for sale in San Francisco, California. In the beginning, Gap sold only music records and Levi jeans, and after it had completed its opening year business, the sales reached close to $1 million. A year later, the second store of the company was opened in San Jose, California, and its headquarters were established in Burlingame.

With the first store which got into operation in late 1960s, the company started its international expansion in Canada. In Europe, the expansion started in 1987 with a store in London. Store Manager – Fully overseeing the store that is setting the employee’s schedules and ensuring proper running of the store. On some occasions, the store manager also provides assistance and solves problems faced by other employees at the store or regarding customers. Experience is essentially required for this position. The yearly pay rate for this position generally ranges between $32,000 and $64,000.

Assistant Store Manager – In the absence of the store manager, the assistant store manager works as in charge of the store operations. Proper running of the store and making sure that it is properly stocked are the duties of the assistant store manager. The annual salary for this employee ranges from $25,000 to $55,000.

Cashier – Processing returns, applying coupons, and ringing up or filing orders are the immediate duties of the cashier. Answering the customers’ queries as the case may be is also the responsibility of the cashier. The mean hourly salary of the cashier is usually between $8 and $14.
