Patricia and Mel Ziegler founded this store in the year 1978 with a travel and safari themed company of clothing. Its catalogue, which was hand-illustrated, and unconventional had items that were unique and high-end. However, later in 1983, the company was purchased by Gap, and it was further given a fashionable image.

The headquarters of the store is located in San Francisco, California. The store operates more than 600 stores worldwide. The first store in Turkey was opened in 2008, followed by more stores in Istanbul. Even more locations are in the pipeline to further increase the number of stores in Turkey. Saudi Arabia got the first Banana Republic store in 2008 and the second in March, 2009. The flagship store in London was inaugurated in March, 2008, and in Philippines in May, 2008.
