History: – Blimpie was founded by a group of three high school friends – Tony Conza, Angelo Bandassare and Peter Decarlo in 1964, its first restaurant being opened at Hoboken, New Jersey. The company derives its revenue mainly through various fees associated with its franchise agreement. The first restaurant itself was a hit that the first franchise was sold to a friend same year for $600. By 1965, Bandassare left the company, while Conza and Decarlo decided to expand it. The two partners expanded the chain to 10 restaurants within two-year period, of which, four were owned by them. Later, they sold the restaurants in their possession and began concentrating on franchising. By 1977, the company was split into two entities- Metropolitan Blimpie owned by Decarlo and International Blimpie Corporation, the original company controlled by Conza.
In 1984, Conza experimented by co-branding Border-café serving southwestern cuisine and manifold efforts on expansion. However, despite of good sales, these efforts were a failure due to policy paralysis and lack of communication with franchises. Conza meet out the problem by enforcing ‘101 small improvements’ and due to same endeavors, the annual sales of this chain increased to 120 million dollars by 1989.
In next two decades, Blimpie introduced new low-calorie products, reduced its franchise failure, concentrated on advertising, and co-branded Maui Tacos and Pasta Central, and thus it kept on expanding. In 2001, Blimpie International was bought by a group of investors led by Jeffery K. Endervelt and now it is a subsidiary of Kahala Corporation.
