Brief History

In the mid-1930, at the height of the Great Depression the vision of targeting selected customers group for auto insurance led to the establishment of GEICO in 1936 by Leo and Lillian Goodwin, a team of husband and wife. Initially, the company targeted military officers and federal government employees. The intensive marketing acumen of Lillian Goodwin earned 3,700 policies in the first year. The company also hired 12 staff members to run the insurance business. The entry of an investment banker, Lorimer Davidson tremendously helped the company find new investors and through him only Warren Buffett was linked to GEICO. The official entry of Warren Buffet was made possible in 1951. The insurance company passed through continuous ups and down over the years and finally became a part of warren Berkshire Hathaway investment firm in 1996 through the acquisition of remaining shares of GEICO.
