Kemper history began in 1912 when insurance agent James S. Kemper urged the leaders of Chicago lumber industry to cash on a new Illinois state law requiring compensation for industrial accident was passed. This led to the incorporation of Lumbermens Mutual Casualty Company in IL on November 18, 1912. In 1913, James Kemper established National Underwriters insurance exchange for offering fire insurance to lumbermen. In 1919, four offices were opened in New York, Philadelphia, Boston and Syracuse. By this time, the company was already offering workers’ compensation, auto insurance and liability insurance.
In 1923, the company entered Canada with two newly established subsidiaries and in the same time, National Underwriters and Lumbermens collectively approved the name Kemper Insurance, although both companies worked independently. American Motorists Insurance Company (AMICO) was incorporated by Kemper in 1926, and The Fidelity Life Association was formed in 1954. Kemper Inc. was finally incorporated as a nonoperating holding company for the Keiser’s property and casualty and life insurance operations in October 1967. The company was shifted to Long Grove, Illinois, northwest of Chicago in 1971. In 1996, Kemper was purchased by Zurich Insurance Group and Insurance Partners L.P partnership.
